Pompano Beach, FL – May, 2016 — ETA Transit Systems of Boca Raton, Florida, announced today that it has upgraded the train tracking system for Tri-Rail, the commuter rail service between Miami and West Palm Beach. The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA), which operates Tri-Rail, sought a solution to improve the accuracy of its train arrival predictions via online and mobile applications.
The upgrade leverages SFRTA’s investment in existing on-board broadband routers to transmit train location information to the cloud where the information can be used to drive Tri-Rail’s new train tracking website and native phone apps. The upgrade provides Tri-Rail with a reliable Intelligent Transit Solution (ITS) that will ensure real-time, accurate passenger information, and reliable communications between trains and central control.
“The station platform arrival prediction was a critical component for Tri-Rail ,” says C. Mikel Oglesby, Deputy Executive Director for SFRTA. “It’s a well-known issue that train operators face; the need to shift platform information for arriving trains. ETA’s SPOT has solved this problem and allows us to quickly and accurately inform riders in real-time of changes to platform assignments.”
Added Mr. Oglesby, “The critical issue for us was budget. We needed to implement these improvements with limited funds. ETA was able to leverage our existing hardware and integrate it into the new system. Without that integration, I don’t believe we would have been able to implement such a substantial and beneficial improvement for our riders in such a short period of time.”
John Maglio, General Manager at ETA Transit says, “An ITS should improve the transit experience for both operators and their customers. Our SPOT system allows agencies to catch up and keep up with rider demands in a very versatile, very affordable way.”
